7:00 pm – 8:15 pmMission: Wolf to Visit Ouray County
If you’ve ever longed to see a wolf in Colorado, you’ll have that opportunity in
Ridgway on Tuesday, April 17th at 7:30 pm in the Ridgway Elementary School
gymnasium. Though your experience will not be in the wilderness, you’ll be up close and
personal with the wild cousin of man’s best friend. Ouray County students will enjoy
presentations during the day, and the Tuesday evening event is open to the public. Please
plan to arrive on time as late-comers will not be admitted due to the disturbance to the
wolves.Mission: Wolf connects people with nature using hands-on experiential education.
Mission: Wolf has two major components. The first is a sanctuary for wolves and a
nature center for people. The other is its national traveling education program called
the Ambassador Wolf Tour. Issues to be addressed in this year’s Wolf Tour include an
introduction to the world of wolves and hybrids; wild wolf issues; captive wolf status,
wolf hybrid ownership experiences; wolf communications and behavioral comparison to
dogs and the current status of wild wolves in North America.Mission: Wolf is a peaceful sanctuary for captive wolves and wolf-dog crosses in the
remote foothills of southern Colorado. All of the animals living at Mission: Wolf share a
common trait – they were all born in a cage. Founder and current director, Kent Weber,
writes on the website (http://www.missionwolf.com) “We figure that if you have a wolf
in a cage, it’s good for one thing: to teach people not to put wolves in cages. Right now
in the US, there are about a quarter of a million wolves in captivity and fewer than 10,000
wolves in the wild. Most of the captive wolves born each year do not survive to see their
first birthday, having been destroyed or neglected.”Mission: Wolf works to inspire individual to become stewards of the earth. While
providing a home for rescued wolves and horses, they create opportunities for growth
through community service and personal interaction with animals. They value education,
stability, and improving relationships between people, animals and the world around
them. Please join us Tuesday, April 17th at 7:30 pm for this unique experience. We appreciate
the financial contribution of the Mount Sneffels Education Fund toward this event.
Donations will be gratefully accepted at the door. -

Montrose PUBLIC LIBRARY COMMUNITY ROOM~MULTIPLE FILM FESTIVAL AWARD WINNTER!! AMERICANS use 60,000 plastic bags every five minutes—single-use disposable bags that we mindlessly throw away. But where is “away?” Where do the bags and other plastics end up, and at what cost to our environment, marine life and human health? Bag It follows “everyman” Jeb Berrier as he navigates our plastic world. Jeb decides to take a closer look at our cultural love affair with plastics. Jeb’s journey in this
documentary film starts with simple questions: Are plastic bags really necessary? Jeb looks beyond plastic bags and discovers that virtually everything in modern society—from baby bottles, to sports
equipment, to personal care products—is made with plastic or contains potentially harmful chemical additives used in the plastic-making process. When Jeb’s journey takes a personal twist, we see how our crazy-for-plastic world has finally caught up with us and what we can do about it. Today. Right now.6:00 pm – 10:00 pmCasino Night

970-260-48696:00 pm – 8:00 pmPublic Access Group of Ouray County May 23 Celebration
Members of the Public Access Group of Ouray County (PAG) invite you to please attend a celebration marking the release of several collaborative work products related to preserving public access on roads and trails in Ouray County. The event will take place on Wednesday, May 23, 2012 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at the Ouray County 4-H Event Center in Ridgway, CO. Doors open at 5:30 pm. The purpose of this presentation is to share information regarding the PAG’s accomplishments since the group’s inception. A draft map, produced as part of a collaborative planning process, that delineates historical roads and trails in Ouray County that are considered to be open to public access will be distributed at the presentation on May 23. PAG member representatives will also outline the process used in the production of this map.
Ouray County's mining heritage created a latticework of trails, wagon roads and foot paths to facilitate access to the many mining claims in the region. As Ouray County transitioned from the mining industry of the 1800’s and early 1900’s to the present tourism industry, these trails were converted to public recreational use and also facilitated public access to and through National Forest Service (USFS) and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands. Unfortunately, the onslaught of private property transactions, development proposals, and lack of a comprehensive map delineating historic byways, mining claims, and private federal property jurisdictions are jeopardizing public access to many of the historic corridors that have been used for over a century.
These threats were the catalyst for the formation of the Public Access Group of Ouray County (PAG) in 2008. The PAG is committed to work in a collaborative fashion to preserve and protect historic public access on Ouray County trails and roads for the future use and enjoyment of all citizens, users, and visitors. PAG members include the Ouray Board of County Commissioners, US Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, and numerous private hiking, trail, and motorized riding groups. Shortly after the PAG formed, the group was awarded a grant from Colorado State Parks and Wildlife. The grant is administered by Ouray County. The purpose of the grant award is to fund planning activities for the PAG such as trail inventory, mapping, process development, and the creation of a documented model for how to approach public access issues that could be used statewide by other groups, governmental entities and organizations.
The PAG effort is a unique and exciting demonstration of proactive community involvement by diverse parties with a common goal. The PAG demonstrates a collaborative, groundbreaking approach to the policy process in its attempt to bring together local government, public agencies, nonprofit organizations, the public, and private interests in the pursuit of creating a generalized model for protecting public access to trail systems that other groups in Colorado can use in the future as a guide for best practices. If you are interested in learning more about the PAG’s efforts, please join the group on May 23, 2012. All regular PAG meetings are also open to the public. You may request more information including the meeting schedule, agendas, and details for the upcoming celebration by contacting the PAG Coordinator, Kate McIntire, at kmcintire@ouraycountyco.gov.6:00 pm – 8:00 pmMeaningful Mindfulness: A Talk by John Bruna
