Candy's Reviews:

For 3/8/10:

Gorillaz/Plastic Beach (Virgin) If you jump around on the 16 trax from the unique virtual band you will find many gems featuring guest appearances with Mos Def, Lou Reed, Snoop Dogg and Bobby Womack and even without guests the group stands alone beautifully.

Carrie Rodriguez/Love & Circumstance (Ninth St. Opus) Performing covers like “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry,” “I Started Loving You Again,” “Big Love” and with a little help from Buddy Miller and Bill Frisell the sweetness and the strength of her musicianship are perfect.

Graham Parker/Imaginary Television (Bloodshot) Great lyrics that will have you rereading the liner notes and a voice and sound that is pretty recognizable.

Seasick Steve/Man From Another Time (Atlantic) His story is intriguing (Oldest nominee for Britain’s Best International Male Artist 2010, he produced Modest Mouse in 1996) and with a gravelly soulful voice with a hint of punk sensibility and blues he is quite the guy.

Garaj Mahal/More Mr. Nice Guy (Owl Studio) The 4 piece band of talent fuses Jazz, Funk, Rock and Electronica with a musical virtuosity that covers a lot of territory.

Don't Overlook:

  • Tia Fuller: She plays the sax, travels with Beyonce, composes and educates.
  • Great American Taxi: Country Rock with a little Delbert Mcclinton feel.
  • Peter Gabriel: All covers with a unique and solemn twist.
  • Bomb The Bass: Accomplished songwriting & sonic scope.
  • Sean Hayes: SanFrancisco singer songwriter with a cool voice.

For 3/1/10:

Nina Simone/Family Friends French Lessons (Andy Stroud) A one of a kind compilation of rare performances by the late great Jazz Legend put together by her husband featuring personalized duets with friends (Hazel Scott & Boy Edgar), family (R&B Group “Friction” are sons) and even an actual French lesson with Simone & her tutor. Listen & appreciate “The High Priestess of Soul!”

Josh Rouse/El Turista (Yep Roc) He is parked in the Rock Library but he covers a new rainbow of territory with Jazzy , Sultry Bossa Nova twists and his voice morphs from Josh Rouse to Gilberto to Paul Simon.

Patty Larkin/25 (Signature Sound) Patty Larkin and 25 Friends including Martin Sexton, Bruce Cockburn, Rosanne Cash, Willy Porter, John Gorka, Dar Williams, Greg Brown and 18 additional well known artists!

Jeff Beck & Joss Stone/I Put A Spell On You (ACTO) It’s only a single but it is a hot sizzling collaboration and a taste of things to come from the legendary artist on his upcoming release “Emotion and Commotion.”

Mose Allison/The Way of the World (Anti) He is 82 years old and with a new release produced by Joe Henry the result is pure Mose with his inimitable lyrics and style.

Holmes Brothers/Feed My Soul (Alligator) 3 gentlemen that are a pure mix of Blues, Soul, R&B and Gospel and with backing vocals by Joan Osborne (she produced the CD) and Catherine Russell it is really fine.

Don't Overlook:

  • Jamie Cullum: He is still young and he really can play the piano.
  • Asylum Street Spankers: Rock, Folk, Gospel, Blues, Jazz, Country, they do it all.
  • John Hiatt: He can write and sing and the sound is familiar and compelling.
  • Groove Armada: Andy Cato & Tom Findlay (And the Bryan Ferry cut is great).
  • Joe Bonamassa: A few originals & a few covers; all excellent (BB King on “Night Life” )!
  • Guitar Shorty: A riveting Lead Guitarist, Vocalist & Bluesman.
