This story is a fable, not a true story, yet it contains a deep truth. A stranger visits a decaying religious community and, after spending a week among the brothers and nuns, announces that one of them is the Christ. The monks and nuns begin to treat each other with more deference, more respect. After all, what if he or she is serving food to the Christ, or sweeping under Her bed? This newfound expectancy seeps even into their dreams, where they are challenged to wear the mantel of Christ’s light themselves. Each of the community members are touched by these dreams, visions, and visitations. Even the surrounding villagers notice the change in the congregation and come to worship more regularly, coming away renewed. The Church glows with light from within, as each chooses to take on the mantel of love. Collectively, they become the body of Christ.
