KVNF Now Hiring Staff Reporter

KVNF has an immediate opening for a staff reporter. This part-time position based in Paonia will start with a commitment of 20 hours per week, with opportunities for growth over time. Schedule flexibility and a desire to cover a wide range of issues are essential.

Broadcasting across 10,000 square miles on 7 FM frequencies with studios in Paonia and Montrose, KVNF is a 41-year old nonprofit media organization committed to public service and community access. The staff reporter will work under the supervision of the news director and is responsible for identifying and reporting on stories throughout KVNF’s listening area. The reporter will have a strong voice and a professional news delivery that fits NPR and KVNF’s programming and journalistic philosophies. 

Responsibilities

  • Researches, writes, reports, and produces a wide variety of stories for newscasts 

  • Gathers actualities, spots, wraps and voicers for newscasts

  • Produces one Local Motion per month

  • Contributes original photographs to KVNF website and social media platforms

  • Provides up-to-the-minute breaking news coverage as appropriate

  • Engages with community as a professional, respectful representative of KVNF

  • Scans area media outlets for breaking and relevant regional news

  • Sets and meets deadlines and completes assigned duties on time

  • Assists in fundraising efforts, membership drives, outreach, and events

  • Attends and participates in general staff meetings 

  • Attends and participates in weekly news story meetings

  • Attends (in person and virtually) and covers local government meetings

  • Other duties as assigned by the News Director or General Manager

Qualifications

  • At least 1 year experience in radio and/or written journalism

  • Demonstrated experience in hosting, board operations, audio and digital editing

  • Desire to learn new equipment and technology, and improve existing skills

  • Strong interest in local and regional news

  • Strong oral and written communication skills

  • An understanding of NPR’s programming, philosophy, style, and code of ethics

  • Ability to prioritize tasks, manage time effectively, and work independently  

  • Work well with diverse group of volunteers, staff members and freelancers

  • Experience in community media or participation in nonprofits preferred

  • Spanish-language fluency a plus
