  • Hotchkiss Town Attorney Bo Nerlin is working on changes to the town’s parking ordinances, reports the Delta County Independent. Nerlin brought up the two-hour limit for parking on Bridge Street between the hours of 8am and 5pm. He also pointed out illegal parking on Bridge Street including trailers, ATVs and go-karts and suggested doubling fees for parking violations.
  • the Delta County Sheriff's Office is advising the community about a phone scam in the area. They say citizens are receiving calls from someone pretending to be a Deputy or Sergeant stating they missed a jury summons and have a warrant for their arrest. Citizens are then told to come to the Sheriff's Office with a card to pay to squash the warrant.
  • Representatives from western Colorado’s North Fork Valley recently returned from another lobbying trip to Washington DC. Each year the Colorado Farm & Food Alliance, Western Slope Conservation Center and the Valley Organic Growers Association sends a delegation to the nation’s capital to discuss issues impacting the Western Slope.
  • As we move closer to the 2024 General Election, immigration continues to be top priority for Republicans…and not just on the national level. There’s been a wave of recent ‘non-sanctuary’ resolutions in our region including Mesa and Montrose Counties.
  • The town of Paonia is looking to hire four full-time staff members and one part-time staff member, including one police officer and one public works member, to replace staff members who are leaving, reports the Delta County Independent.
  • Colorado House Bill 24-1066, introduced earlier this legislative session, addresses many issues related to an increase in assaults against healthcare workers across the state. Rural hospitals like Delta Health are finding ways to address the alarming issue now.
  • Paonia Trustees voted against purchasing the former Vo-Tech school in Paonia, reports the Delta County Independent. The decision came after a tour of the building and community comments during Tuesday night’s meeting.
  • Delta Police Department reported a TikTok post threatening a shooting at Delta Middle School on Monday. The threat stated that a shooting would take place "sometime before the end of this school year." Later that afternoon, officers identified a juvenile responsible for the threat. Charges are pending following the completion of the investigation.
  • The latest All Points Transit route from Montrose to Ouray called Our-Way hit the road last week. The new bus service is the result of a 2022 state grant obtained by Ouray City officials.
  • Four of the five Paonia town board candidates attended a recent candidate forum hosted by the Delta County Independent. Present were Paonia Trustee Paige Smith, who is running for the mayor's office uncontested, current Trustee Kathy Swartz and citizens William Brunner and Walter Czech who are running for three open trustee seats. Write-in candidate Linda McCone was absent from the forum. All present candidates say working on water infrastructure is the top priority. The municipal election is April 2nd.
