Colorado River water managers are facing a monumental task. Federal officials have given leaders in seven western states a new charge, to commit to an unprecedented amount of conservation and do it before a deadline later this summer. Without major cutbacks in water use the nation’s two largest reservoirs are in danger of reaching critically low levels. KUNC’s Alex Hager reports. Kate Redmond took a tour last week of the one million gallon tank for the domestic water supply in Paonia. The tank has been offline for years, but now the Public Works Department is preparing it to run again. Plus, a controversial proposal to bring water from the San Luis Valley to Douglas County is now unlikely to become a reality. As KUNC’s Alex Hager reports, county commissioners voted against using American Rescue Plan funds to build the pipeline.

A proposed diversion to carry water out of the San Luis Valley and into Douglas County is drawing opposition from farmers, environmentalists, and politicians like U.S. Senators Michael Bennet and John Hickenlooper. If approved, it would transfer over 20,000 acre feet per year of groundwater from underneath Great Sand Dunes National Park and Baca National Wildlife Refuge to the Front Range. Plus, last week in Delta 20 members of local law enforcement joined staffers from the nonprofit Center for Mental Health, to participate in Crisis Intervention Training. Retired sergeant Jeff Santelli and his coaches wrapped up week-long sessions with role-playing scenarios to give participants practice handling crisis situations. Gavin Dahl reports.
