Delta County Sheriff's Office

  • The death of a Delta County woman who vanished last November was ruled accidental, according to the autopsy report released March 13 reports the Delta County Independent.Delta County Sheriff Mark Taylor says 40 year old - Samantha Bartolo’s death was the result of drug intoxication and exposure to the elements. Although her death was ruled accidental, elements of the case remain suspicious, says Taylor, adding that “investigators continue to work diligently, trying to piece things together.”
  • Pro-abortion group Coloradoans Protecting Reproductive Freedom is collecting signatures across the state hoping to protect abortion access through a constitutional amendment. Ballot Initiative 89, slated for the November 2024 general election, seeks to protect abortion from governmental interference and require insurance companies to pay for abortion care.
  • A delay in completion of its 2022 audit is costing the town of Paoina financially, including the loss of a $956,000 grant to be used toward water projects. The late audit is also holding up other state public funds to which the town is entitled, reports the Delta County Independent.
  • A proposed diversion to carry water out of the San Luis Valley and into Douglas County is drawing opposition from farmers, environmentalists, and politicians like U.S. Senators Michael Bennet and John Hickenlooper. If approved, it would transfer over 20,000 acre feet per year of groundwater from underneath Great Sand Dunes National Park and Baca National Wildlife Refuge to the Front Range. Plus, last week in Delta 20 members of local law enforcement joined staffers from the nonprofit Center for Mental Health, to participate in Crisis Intervention Training. Retired sergeant Jeff Santelli and his coaches wrapped up week-long sessions with role-playing scenarios to give participants practice handling crisis situations. Gavin Dahl reports.
