Megan Hess and Shirley Koch, co-owners of Sunset Mesa Funeral Directors and Donor Services, intend to appeal their prison terms imposed on them for mail fraud in U.S District Court, reports the Montrose Daily Press. The City of Montrose will go to a Single-Stream Recycling Program effective immediately. The change will limit the type of recyclable plastics that are accepted. The city will collect only plastic items marked with 1, 2, 4, and 5 recycling symbols. This week on Local Motion, reporter Laura Palmisano interviews Dr. Nicki Gonzales about how Latinos shaped Colorado history. Dr. Gonzales is a noted historian and Professor of History and Vice Provost for Diversity and Inclusion at Regis University in Denver. She is also a member of History Colorado’s State Historian’s Council. Gonzales was appointed Colorado State Historian last year by Governor Jared Polis for a one-year term that ended at the beginning of this month. She was the first Latino to hold that position.

This week on Local Motion Gavin Dahl is joined by two guests, Mary Menz and Regina Lopez-Whiteskunk, to discuss a special event coming up Sunday, July 10th from 2 to 4pm at the Ute Indian Museum in Montrose. History Colorado and Valley Food Partnership are presenting a talk on Ute Ethnobotany and Land Stewardship and a tour of the museum’s ethnobotany garden.

History Colorado, the state’s historic fund, recently awarded the Hinsdale County Historical Society a $50,000 grant. The money will help in the restoration of a rail car that once transported people and goods to and from the town of Lake City. However, the grant requires matching funds. The organization already has $15,000 in pledges from a small group of local rail enthusiasts. But, the historical society still needs to raise an additional $25,000 to match the grant.
