Give a Flock for KVNF

Jan 19, 2014

Unbeflockinglievable: A Flocking Story

A flock of flamingos broke out of the Washington, D.C. Zoo and appear to be headed towards Paonia, Colorado traveling via KVNF's airwaves. They’re expected to land on the 90.9 frequency in Paonia on February 1st.

While the details of the birds' escape remains unclear, they’ve been identified as a group of activists out to give a leg up to community radio. Their activism tactics will include staging stand-ins in resident's front yards and employing the silent treatment.

Patricia has been a dedicated DJ and volunteer at KVNF for over a decade, and previously hosted a weekly country music show at KDNK in Carbondale.

Ali Lightfoot/KVNF

This Saturday, December 7th at the Paradise Theater, KVNF is screening a series of documentary films on the Pass the Mic project, featuring the full-length interviews our youth reporters conducted themselves.

The event is free and open to the public, and runs from 3-4 pm.

I recently spoke to Ali about the project, and what she’s learned from working with youth reporters.

And the Winner Is...

Congratulations to Kevin O'Brien, the winner of our raffle contest for the 7 day, 6 night trip to Fiji!

Kevin and a (very, very special) guest of his choice will be traveling to the tropical paradise of Fiji for a luxurious stay at the Koro Sun Resort, Fiji's premier adventure resort on the island of Vanua Levu.

At Thursday night's annual meeting, KVNF's Ali Lightfoot and Amber McDaniel called Kevin to surprise him with the good news. He said his heart was beating out of his chest!

2013 KVNF Spring Pledge Drive

Mar 14, 2013

Change. Only six letters, but they string together to create one of the most powerful words in our language, and one of the most potent forces in our world.

Being a person with a strong bent toward etymology, I like to trace the origins of words as a means of unfolding their inner power. Like so many words in the English language, “change” comes to us from the Latin word cambire, meaning to exchange or barter. What a timely metaphor for KVNF’s 2013 Spring Pledge Drive!

Curtis Stigers returns to the Montrose Pavilion on Saturday, January 26, to celebrate KVNF and Hospice. The audience has been asking for his return since his performance nine years ago. Curtis, a modern Sinatra, takes a mix of standards and modern pop tunes and transforms them into swinging jazz tunes.

What is "Pass the Mic" all About?

Oct 10, 2012

"Pass the Mic" is a youth storytelling and news corps program developed by KVNF community radio in Paonia, Colorado, in partnership with the North Fork Heart & Soul Project. Over the course of two years, 14 young reporters will be assigned to a "beat" reporting on a North Fork industry. Youth participants learn the skills of how to produce interviews and stories in a multi-media context, and will be supported in presenting their final projects to the valley.

MAKE HIM DANCE!

Oct 10, 2012

This just in!

The "wooden, dancing, mannequin, puppet guy" near Jeff's desk in the KVNF office has joined the cause! In a mysterious turn of events, he showed up yesterday with a hand-written note of his very own, proclaiming that he, "Will dance for pledges"! Who could turn down such a generous offer of support from our loyal friend.

Make a pledge! See him dance! Maybe a little stop motion animation? For the right price?

Bob Dylan // Tempest

Sep 8, 2012

Released 9.11.12 Columbia Records

Not many artists stay sharp, relevant, and great into their 70’s and later (Picasso, Neil Young, Vladimir Horowitz, et al., come to mind), I have no problem including Bob, at 71, in this elite group. If you are a Dylan fan and don’t have this record you must run, not walk, to your computer and order it.
