Become a DJ

All KVNF DJs are volunteers from the community who have a passion for music and love sharing it.  KVNF provides the technical training and a vast library of music from a wide variety of musical genres. DJs are also welcome to bring in their own music to supplement the musical selections from the KVNF library.

DJ Training will consist of a 2 hour orientation, one-on-one training with the broadcasting console and shadowing other volunteer DJs. Once training is complete, DJs are required to complete a 1-hour program demo as a final test to become a KVNF DJ. Trainees will be critiqued and receive feedback on their demo by the DJ Coordinator. Training should take roughly 10-20 hours of your time depending on experience.

Once training is completed, new DJs start off substituting for shows and DJing during our late night programming after 9:30 pm. Once a more permanent position opens in a musical genre they appreciate, a DJ may then be asked to step into that program regularly.

Buscamos DJs que hablen español para presentar La Nueva los lunes por la noche de 7 a 10 pm. Si estás interesado, comunícate directamente con Andrea. Se ofrecerá capacitación en español.

All KVNF DJs must read and sign the KVNF DJ Guidelines & Agreement. Please read them carefully before inquiring to become a DJ.

Please use the sign up link below to be involved in the next DJ Training.

DJ Self Evaluation Process

KVNF relies on more than 90 dedicated volunteer DJs to bring a diverse and engaging mix of music to our listeners. Our community expects a high level of professionalism, creativity, and on-air quality that reflects the character of the station. Because KVNF staff and the Program Committee cannot regularly evaluate every DJ, starting in 2026, we are implementing an annual self-evaluation process to help each volunteer reflect on their show, maintain high standards, and continue growing as on-air hosts.

Objective

Ensure all KVNF DJs complete a self-evaluation annually to support high-quality programming and a consistent, professional on-air sound.

Self-evaluations are designed for growth, not punishment. Only the Program Committee (PC) and relevant staff will view responses. Evaluations are not made public and do not influence volunteer standing unless the DJ fails to complete the form, or there are serious repeated issues. Honest self-assessment helps us better support you and strengthen the sound of the station.

Process for DJs

  • Each KVNF DJ will complete one self-evaluation per calendar year.
  • DJs should review one full, recent recording of their show using the 2-week archive.
  • Evaluations are submitted through this web form; paper copies are available upon request.
  • DJs will receive acknowledgement that their form has been received and any feedback from the Program Committee will be delivered via email or phone call after the monthly Program Committee meeting.
  • DJs who do not submit an evaluation by December 31 each year may be paused on the DJ roster until it is complete at the discretion of the volunteer coordinator.
  • DJs without standing shows are expected to perform the self evaluation of one of their substitute shows.
