Your community radio station seeks the next team member for KVNF’s award-winning news team. This is a unique opportunity to show your hosting personality and collaborate with a motivated team. In this position, you would be the primary anchor for NPR’s Morning Edition program every weekday morning with a 6 am start time for a total of an hour and a half of on-air time. In addition to hosting you will provide news content for our Regional Newscast, web postings, as well as posting to our social media accounts. Ideal candidates have a strong hosting voice and knowledge of issues in our Western Slope communities. KVNF holds to high journalism standards as an NPR member news department.

KVNF prefers candidates with experience in radio and/or print journalism or equivalent. Experience in hosting, board operations, audio editing, and reporting are a plus. A strong interest in local and regional news is expected. At KVNF you will work with a diverse group of volunteers, staff members, and freelancers. Community radio or nonprofit experience is a plus.

The position is based in Western Colorado and requires a willingness to be flexible in the work schedule and location during certain times of the year. Minimum hours 28 per week. Range of hourly pay is $18.00 - $20.00/hour DOE. Health stipend, generous paid time off, and mileage reimbursement available.

Job Title: Morning Edition Host and Staff Reporter
Date: 02/2024
Reports to: General Manager
Terms: Part-time, Hourly

Job Summary:
The Staff Reporter works under the supervision of the General Manager and is responsible for anchoring NPR’s Morning Edition weekdays. In addition this position is responsible for identifying and reporting on stories throughout KVNF’s listening area. The Host/Reporter will serve as the primary for Morning Edition and will curate scripts that provide information covering a wide range of issues and happenings in our varied communities. The position requires a willingness to be flexible in the work schedule during certain times of the year.

Major Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

● Hosting NPR Morning Edition by researching, listening to and curating content to write/fill daily scripts/spots
● Researches, writes, reports, and produces a wide variety of stories
● Gathers actualities, spots, wraps and voicers for newscasts by scanning area media outlets for breaking and relevant regional news
● Helps to produce content for public affairs show - Local Motion
● Contributes original content to KVNF website
● Participates in training and workshops and contributes content to KVNF website and social media platforms and Eblast weekly/monthly
● Meets deadlines and completes assigned duties on time.
● Engages with community as a professional, respectful representative of KVNF
● Assists in fundraising efforts and community outreach such as membership drives and events when needed. Will include
● Attends and participates in all general staff meetings
● Attends and participates in weekly news story meetings
● Attends (in person and virtually) and covers local government meetings
● Engages in the community as a respectful representative of KVNF

Minimum Requirements:
The Staff Reporter must have at least 1 year experience in radio and/or print journalism or a demonstrated equivalent. Also, some demonstrated experience in hosting, board operations, audio and digital editing and strong verbal reporting skills are important. A strong interest in local and regional news is expected along with strong oral and written communication skills. An understanding of NPR’s programming, philosophy, style, and code of ethics is essential. An ability to prioritize tasks, manage time effectively, and work independently is necessary; along with the ability to work with diverse group of volunteers, staff members and freelancers. Community radio and/or nonprofit experience are a plus.

Essential Core Competencies: Written Communication, Organizing and Planning, Active listening, Informal Communication

Essential Physical Functions: Ability to travel to reporting gigs, fundraisers, Studio M, and events.

Equipment used: Audio engineering equipment, broadcast equipment, and computers with specialized software.
