The Colorado Orange apple, a prized 19th-century variety, was long thought extinct. It was described in the 1800s as yellowish orange, with a red blush. It was a superb winter keeper. Recently some determined orchard sleuths tracked down an old tree in Fremont County. DNA and historic records confirmed they’d rediscovered the Colorado Orange apple. Now many are working to bring this heritage fruit back to life including Ela Family Farms. The flavor was a mix of sweet and tart. Some like the flavor and others rate it as mediocre.
