We live in an era of unpredictable weather patterns so how can we cultivate deeper wisdom in the garden? The answer lies in phenology which is the time-honored practice of observing the rhythms of nature to guide our gardening choices. For instance, plant peas when forsythia shrubs bloom, signaling soil temperatures are just right for peas. Plant corn when oak leaves are the size of a squirrel’s ear. Peppers and eggplant can be transplanted when bearded irises are blooming. We use the iris to tell us that the soil is perfectly warm.
