Growing Home - Organic Lawn Fertilizer

A study has found that organic lawn fertilizer decreased compaction, helped correct the soil pH and caused earlier turf green-up when compared to non-organic, chemical-based fertilizers. Organic fertilizer applications were most effective when the lawn was core aerated prior to the application of the fertilizer. Core aeration is best done in spring before warm weather sets in. There are increased concerns about salt buildup and increased weeds if immature manure-based compost is used as an organic fertilizer.
