Picking a ripe watermelon in the produce aisle is like solving a riddle. Forget the old thump test – instead, check the field spot on the belly of the melon. A buttery yellow patch on the underside of the watermelon is a sure sign of ripeness, while a whitish or pale green spot means it’s not ready yet. A ripe melon also feels heavy for its size. If your picking a watermelon off the vine, look for the nearest tendril to turn brown as nature’s “done” indicator. Then cut in and enjoy that sweet, home-grown reward
