Calvin Lamborn, a plant breeder from Idaho, created the sugar snap pea in 1979. Before that, peas were either for shelling or snow peas, which were harvested prior to the pea seed enlarging. Calvin Lamborn’s sugar snap peas have sweet edible pods and full size sweet peas. Sugar Snap peas prefer cooler nights and can be sown in early spring or late summer when the night heat ebbs away, Peas can tolerate some shade and need regular water. Calvin Lamborn used traditional breeding methods and also developed purple and red colored peas.
