Often overlooked, crabapple trees are hardy, disease-resistant, and pollinator-friendly. Their spring blossoms support bees, and some varieties produce fruit suitable for jellies and ciders. The flowers can be pink, white, red and coral. In our climate, crabapples are excellent ornamental trees and aid in pollinating edible apples. If you detest the clean-up of dropped fruit, look for crabapple varieties that hold on to the fruit well into winter - feeding winter birds, or look for varieties that are fruitless like the “Summer Snow” crabapple.
