iSeeChange: Dangerous Crossings

Colorado Department of Transportation

The trees are starting to turn and the mornings are getting colder.  Fall is here, and that means increased animal activity.  As part of iseechange, KVNF’S Jake Ryan had his own question about something he saw, and brought it to Jeff Peterson, the Colorado Department of Transportation's wildlife program manager.

Highlights from the discussion:

  • Some herds have seen a spike, but statewide, animal collisions are down
  • Wildlife fencing, along with culvert and animal overpasses, are credited for the decline
  • Global warming may shift migration times
  • CDOT is working on new technology that will alert drivers when an animal is detected nearby
