Ouray Police Officer Killed In Accident On US 550

Scott Mills
City of Ouray

An officer with the City of Ouray Police Department was killed in an accident on U.S. 550 on Monday.

Sgt. Scott Mills, 51, was riding his motorcycle while off-duty when a truck collided with him on the highway between Ouray and Ridgway.

A report from Colorado State Patrol said Mills slowed down to make a left turn. However, a Chevy pickup behind him did not slow down.

Officials said the truck struck the rear of the motorcycle ejecting Mills, who wasn't wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

He died at the scene.

Robert Demid, the 78-year-old driver of the truck, was uninjured, according to officials.

Colorado State Patrol said the crash remains under investigation.

Ouary Administrator Patrick Rondinelli said Mills had been with the police department for two years and brought nearly two decades of experience to the force.

Rondinelli described him as leader who was calm and caring.

"This is a devastating loss for our community," he said.

A memorial fund for the family of Sgt. Mills has been set up at the Citizen's State Bank of Ouray along with a GoFundMe page.

Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday, March 22 at 11:00 a.m. at Grace Community Church in Montrose.
