Local Motion: New Grant Funds for Rural Broadband

Virgil Turner

KVNF's Gavin Dahl explores broadband developments in rural Colorado with Virgil Turner, regional broadband project director for the nonprofit Region 10, and Colorado Sun reporter Tamara Chuang. As Tamara reported, more than a dozen different organizations, government agencies, and even competitors worked together last month to make sure the Cameron Peak Fire wouldn’t knock out the internet around Estes Park. $6M is flowing from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to build fiber that will connect Moffat, Eagle, and Grand counties. Elevate, the fiber internet subsidiary of DMEA is getting $2M in state funds. And the Governor is asking for $160M for broadband in the next state budget.

Gavin Dahl is a writer and producer with a passion for community media. He worked for KVNF from July 2020 to July 2022. He won awards and recognition for his KVNF reporting from the Colorado Broadcasters Association and Society of Professional Journalists. His writing has been published by The Montrose Press, The Sopris Sun, Boulder Weekly, Raw Story, Radio Survivor, Boise Weekly, and The Austin American-Statesman.
