FEATURE: Hundreds of students at Job Corps in Riverton, Wyoming are scrambling to finish up the program, after the Trump Administration tried to pause it indefinitely. For many, that means leaving their community. The Mountain West News Bureau’s Hanna Merzbach has the details.
NEWS: A 49 year old Ridgway man was sentenced to three years in prison last week for sexually assaulting a 28-year-old woman in 2023 after he claimed he was drunk and thought she was his wife. According to reporting in the Ouray County Plaindealer, 49 year old Brian Scranton hugged and kissed his wife and daughter before he was led away by Ouray County Sheriff’s Office deputies and taken to the Montrose County Jail. Scranton will ultimately be transferred to the Colorado Department of Corrections to begin serving his sentence. The sentence came seven years after he was found not guilty in another sex assault case – a jury acquitted Scranton of sexually assaulting a woman during a house party in Ouray County in 2015.
Delta County Public Health recently installation of a new air quality monitor that will enhance the county's ability to track and respond to local air quality conditions. The state-of-the-art monitor will provide real-time, hourly data. According to the Public Health Department, the new monitor will immediately begin collecting and transmitting vital information. Data will be publicly accessible allowing residents and healthcare to use real time information to make informed decisions about outdoor activities and potential health precautions.
Ouray County will continue maintenance of CR-17 after last week’s rains. They will also tackle road repairs on Imogene Pass and wall repair on Camp Bird Road above Senator Gulch. Crews ask that the public avoid using Camp Bird Road for any reason during maintenance.
Delta Library in celebrating Seth Weber's Faro Project series, which brings public awareness to child welfare through his sculptures and artwork. On Friday, June 13, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Local organizations working with youth will be present and will have information available for patrons to learn about the services available to children throughout Delta County.
COLORADO RIVER NEWS: As leaders from seven Western states keep negotiating the future of the Colorado River behind closed doors, the federal government says it’s trying to get them to come together. ENVIROMENTAL NEWS: The group Colorado Rising for Communities has launched a first-of-its-kind public alert system to make residents aware of oil and gas spills and the risks to agricultural land, livestock, water resources and community health. In April alone, 229 spills were reported in Weld County, more than six per day. Eric Galatas reports.
