Arbol Farmers Market and updates on the South Rim Fire

KVNF FARM FRIDAY: On today’s KVNF Farm Friday, Marty Durlin takes us to the Arbol Farmers Market in Paonia where the growing and harvesting season is in full swing.

The Arbol Market, now in its fifth season, is a project of the Paonia-based Learning Council, a multi-pronged non-profit encompassing arts, health, and education. Executive Director Alicia Michelson talked about the origins of the year-round market.

SOUTH RIM FIRE STORIES: We begin with an update on the South Rim Fire burning at the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park near Montrose. After a week of active fire on the rim the blaze has consumed over 4,000 acres with zero containment.

The fire under the control of Rocky Mountain Area Complex Incident Management Team 3 is utilizing eight crews with a total of 458 personnel, five aircraft, 23 fire engines and 14 pieces of heavy equipment. As of yesterday’s briefing, the Curecanti National Recreation Area remains open to the public; however, Blue Mesa Reservoir remains closed west of the middle bridge for aircraft operations.

The South Rim Fire at the Black Canyon has resulted in several evacuations in Montrose County and is also impacting the region’s outdoor recreation economy. Rocky Mountain Community Radio’s Caroline Llanes shares details from a recent community meeting.

In response to the South Rim Fire, Montrose County School District has designated Johnson Elementary School as the Incident Command Post and primary fire operations center due to its close proximity to the fire. Mikayla Unruh, PIO for Montrose County School District, spoke with KVNF Senior Reporter Lisa Young on the district’s involvement in the fire response.
