NEWS: The town of Paonia recently announced grant money for a critical pedestrian and school-zone corridor. According to a press release, the town has secured nearly $1.9 million dollars from a federal BUILD Grant for a complete reconstruction of Grand Avenue from 4th Street through the 5th Street intersection to include an additional 200 feet north. The project dubbed "Safe Pathways for Paonia" will include new sidewalks, curbs, and gutters; ADA-compliant curb ramps; painted crosswalks and pedestrian-activated signals as well as grooved pavement to alert drivers of school crossings and reduced speed zones. The project aims to improve connectivity to existing pedestrian infrastructure within the town. This vital project is completely funded through grants including another sizable grant from CDOT and local match of roughly $30,000.
The City of Delta chose four community members to serve on its Citizen Task Force on the Unhoused. According to reporting in the High Country Spotlight, the city is slated to open its 7,200-square-foot shelter next month in what was the county’s work-release facility. A community earlier this summer drew concerns about the growing homeless population and the lack of “teeth” in city code and law enforcement. Many see the problem as exacerbated by the State of Colorado’s recent legislation regarding bail and jail time for minor offenses.
The Colorado State Patrol is seeking the person they say was driving a Chevy Cobalt when it struck a pedestrian on U.S. 50 early July 6. The pedestrian, later identified as a 51 year Montrose man, was found deceased in the road. Law enforcement believe that 24 year old Karin Leal-Ruiz was behind the wheel of the Cobalt. Leal-Ruiz and a passenger are being sought as part of the investigation. The State Patrol is asking anyone with information as to their whereabouts to contact investigators.
