Are we hard-wired to see the glass half empty?

Recent research suggests we need nine positive statements to counterbalance a single criticism. I seem to be hard-wired to focus on my shortcomings. Perhaps this is an evolutionary mechanism, designed to ensure I learn from, and do not repeat, mistakes. Could I learn to see the glass differently, to notice presence rather than absence? Every night as I fall asleep I give thanks for seven things in my life. In the morning I wake, rouse the boys, and sit with my mug of hot water, practicing gratitude for its nourishing presence.
