Program That Teaches How To Eat Healthy Locally Expands

A program that teaches families in Montrose and Olathe about eating healthy locally is expanding.

Local Farmacy Rx started last year.

"The meaning behind [the name] is your food is your medicine, sort of speak,"said Abbie Brewer, a coordinator for LiveWell Montrose Olathe.

The organization oversees the program.

"It's designed to provide assistance and education to low-income individuals," said Brewer. "It provides nutrition education and also vouchers for local fruits and vegetables to be purchased from Montrose Farmers Market and other local stands within our community."

The program lasts for 12 weeks. Families who receive food stamps and have at least one child between the ages of 6 and 12 can enroll.

She said participants must commit to attending class twice a month.

"Ultimately at the end of the program, they have learned a significant amount about how to use local fruits and vegetables, what’s in season in our area, where it comes from and also how to prepare it," said Brewer.

She said classes will be held in Montrose and Olathe and conducted in English and Spanish.

Last year, nine families participated. This year up to 40 can.

Applications are due to LiveWellMontrose Olathe by June 15.
