FEATURE: The South Rim Fire at the Black Canyon National Park has been burning since July 10th. Staff and campers at the park were immediately evacuated, and in the following hours evacuations spread to nearby properties. Today we feature a young rancher who, along with other family members, were asked to evacuate.
In a bit of good news, some evacuation zones have been revised allowing some residents to return home, however, the public is urged to remain alert and to exercise caution as conditions can change quickly. You can find updated evacuation news at the Montrose County Sheriff’s Office Facebook Page. The fire is listed at 4,220 acres with 31% containment.
LOCAL NEWS: The town of Hotchkiss will hold a public hearing on Thursday to decide whether or not to grant Valley High, LLC, a marijuana dispensary, the right to move to a location that is less than 500 feet from a school. In an unusual move, trustees unanimously approved an emergency ordinance during its July 10th meeting to allow the dispensary to move and is expediting the process with Thursday’s special meeting and public hearing on the matter. The new location, if approved, would be within 300 feet of a private Baptist school.
The Sons of Silence Motorcycle Club now has a visible presence in the Delta community. According to reporting in the Delta County Independent, the club is now located at 128 Palmer Street. Despite having a reputation with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Department of Justice (DOJ) as one of the top five most dangerous motorcycle clubs, local law enforcement has seen few issues concerning the local chapter over the years, according to Delta Police Chief Luke Fedler. The club reportedly plans to hold rallies soon. More on this story can be found at deltacountyindependent.com
