This week is Sunshine Week, the annual nationwide celebration of access to public information and the right to know. On Tuesday, March 15 at the Denver Press Club, the nonprofit Colorado Freedom of Information Coalition held a panel called Schooled in Secrecy, exploring the recent trend among some school boards in Colorado to disregard or evade Colorado Open Meetings Law by discussing public business, including the replacement of district superintendents, outside of public view.

Over the weekend KVNF was honored at two different events in Denver. Our news department brought home 3 third place wins, 6 second place wins, and 2 first place wins in the Top of the Rockies contest administered by the Society of Professional Journalists Colorado Chapter on behalf of chapters in Utah, New Mexico and Wyoming. At the gala for the Colorado Broadcasters Association, we earned 3 second place wins, and 2 first place wins.

KVNF board member Betsy Marston was honored with a Keeper of the Flame award by the Society of Professional Journalists on Saturday for her two decades of work as editor at High Country News and her ongoing work as editor of Writers on the Range. Plus Nevada, Idaho and other states are looking at reservoirs as a solution to secure a water supply. Alex Hager of KUNC reports on one huge project known as Chimney Hollow.

As Earth Day is celebrated across the globe today, we continue inching toward a tipping point where reversing the climb of greenhouse gasses in the environment may no longer be possible. Some corporations and organizations respond by using carbon offsets. But a group of locals is digging their hands in the dirt to not only act locally and think globally, but also engage in a practical response. Kate Redmond reports.
